National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) & Garmin Corp., Ltd. offers an exceptional opportunity for international students worldwide through the International Industrial Talents Education Special Program (INTENSE Program) in Materials and Optoelectronic Science (English-taught Program), an English-taught master's program that connects advanced study with industry-driven career opportunities.
This is a 2-year master's program focusing on research in:
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Optoelectronic Science and Physics
- Polymer Science, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
This program is a full scholarship program, jointly funded by the government and industry:
- Tuition fully covered: NT$100,000 per year (NT$50,000 per semester; the university covers the remainder if any)
- Monthly living stipend: NT$15,000 provided by Garmin Corp., Ltd.
- One-way airfare to Taiwan: up to NT$9,000
- Document-related expenses (visa, document verification, health check): up to NT$10,000
In addition, graduates will have the opportunity to sign a 2-year employment contract with Garmin Corp., Ltd.!
Garmin is a global leader in the research, development, manufacturing, and sales of GPS and communication products. Garmin offers a comprehensive and diverse product portfolio across five major markets: aviation, marine, automotive, outdoor recreation, and fitness, as well as applications for smart devices. In recent years, Garmin has also achieved rapid growth in wearable technology and action camera markets. This industry partnership not only enhances academic learning through real-world applications, but also helps students develop practical skills, professional networks, and a strong foundation for a successful global career in high-tech industries.
(1) Materials Analysis Laboratory Engineer / Associate Engineer (Organic Materials)
- Independently operate and maintain instruments in the materials chemistry analysis laboratory, such as XRF, FTIR, Micro Shore A, viscosity meters, etc.
- Handle testing requests assigned by engineers, prepare measurement reports, and issue notifications for abnormal results.
- Participate in new product development and mass production readiness, including pre production preparation, failure analysis and resolution, fixture design discussions, and defining testing procedures. Work with domestic and international teams to ensure high quality mass production within planned timelines.
- Communicate measurement results across departments and coordinate with material or chemical suppliers regarding measurement-related issues.
- Provide administrative and general support for departmental operations.
(2) Display and Optical Technology Engineer (Outdoor)
- Collaborate with global engineering teams and suppliers to develop next-generation Garmin products, including display modules, touch screens, backlight design, optical adhesives, cover glass manufacturing processes, and coating technologies.
- Conduct advanced technology development and implementation, including developing partner suppliers, defining specifications with suppliers, establishing verification procedures and schedules, and supporting panel and touch module design and related validation
- Participate in new product development and mass production readiness, including preproduction preparation, failure analysis and resolution, fixture design discussions, and defining testing procedures. Work with domestic and international teams to ensure highquality mass production within planned timelines.
- Perform real-world product testing to ensure excellent user experience and alignment with customer needs
- Conduct competitive product analysis and collect industry trends to assess and enhance product competitiveness.
- Students must achieve TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) Level A2 or above in listening and reading by the second year of enrollment.
- After graduation, recipients must work in Taiwan for a period equivalent to the length of the scholarship support, up to 2 years. For example, students receiving 1 year of corporate sponsorship must work 1 year in Taiwan; those with 2 years of sponsorship must work 2 years.
- If a student withdraws from the program or fails to meet the post-graduation work obligation due to their own reasons, the scholarship and living allowance must be returned proportionally based on unfulfilled months.
